During the Summer months, air conditioning can account for up to 50 per cent of your electricity bill. But there are some things you can do to reduce the cost.

Manage your thermostat

Anyone with central air conditioner should have a programmable thermostat. This way you can set it to run a bit warmer when you’re away from home and lower the temperature just before you return.

If you have electric heat, lower your thermostat by two degrees to save 5% on your bill. Lowering it five degrees could save up to 10%.

A few degrees can make a big difference. Toronto Hydro suggests that homeowners with air conditioners set the thermostat to 25 degrees for peak hours in a day and then set it to 22 degrees in off-peak hours.

Turn off the air conditioner when you are not home

Consider turning the air conditioner off when you’re not home. There’s no point in cooling a home if no one’s in it.

Also, installing your central air conditioner in a shaded area can improve the unit’s efficiency by up to 10%.

ENERGY STAR

ENERGY STAR rating indicates high-efficiency products. According to Natural Resources Canada, air conditioners using the ENERGY STAR qualifications use 30 to 40 per cent less energy than models from 10 to 15 years ago.

Check your hot water heater

You can save as much as 5% for every 6 degrees that you turn down your hot water heater. Try to keep it at between 50 and 60 degrees.

Also, you can consider purchasing a Tankless Water Heater, as for homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, demand (or tankless) water heaters can be 30%–40% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters, saving a typical family about $100 or more per year, depending on water usage. When you are not home, set your water heater to “vacation” mode, or turn the temperature as low as possible.
