Understanding HVAC Efficiency Ratings And How They Work
Efficiency Ratings

When you’re in the market for a new HVAC system, it can be hard to know what to look for. Aire One, a heating and cooling company with over 30 years of experience, is here to help you with questions about what the efficiency ratings mean for your home and your budget.

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER)

SEER is the ratio between how much energy it takes to run an air conditioning unit compared to the output of the cooling unit. This number is based on an average temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF)

HSPF is similar to SEER in that it measures how efficient the heating system is. The HSPF rating available for heating units sold in the United States is between 8 and 10 for heat pumps. The higher rating means the heating unit is more efficient.

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE)

The AFUE for your furnace is similar to the miles-per-gallon measurement for your automobile. This rating provides information on the heat output as compared to the money spent on fuel.

Minimum Efficiency Rating Value (MERV)

MERV is a rating that was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioner Engineers. It’s an important number that rates how efficient your HVAC’s air filter is when it comes to removing dust, particles and debris. The rating scale is from 1 to 16, with the higher number being the most efficient.
