On a hot Ontario summer day, your air conditioner is doing more than you think. It is not just lowering the temperature, it is also pulling moisture out of the air. When the humidity climbs, that second job gets much harder, and it can leave your home feeling clammy even when the thermostat says you should be comfortable. Understanding how humidity affects your air conditioner helps explain that sticky feeling, longer run times and higher summer bills, and points to what actually fixes it.

How Humidity Affects Your Air Conditioner: Two Jobs at Once

Every air conditioner handles two separate loads at the same time:

Sensible cooling is lowering the air temperature. This is the part you can read on a thermostat.
Latent cooling is removing moisture from the air. As warm indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil, water vapour condenses on the coil and drains away, leaving the air drier.

On a dry day, most of your AC's effort goes into temperature. On a humid day, a big share of that same capacity gets spent condensing water instead, which is why the two are always in a bit of a tug-of-war.

Why High Humidity Makes Your AC Work Harder

When the air is full of moisture, your air conditioner has to wring that water out before it can meaningfully drop the temperature. That has real consequences you can feel and see on your bill:

Longer run times. The system spends more of its capacity on moisture removal, so it runs longer to reach the set temperature.
That "cold but clammy" feeling. A room can sit at a comfortable temperature and still feel sticky, because the humidity has not come down enough. Moist air simply feels warmer than dry air at the same temperature.
Higher energy use. Longer cycles and the temptation to set the thermostat even lower both push your summer energy costs up.
Comfort that never quite arrives. If the system is fighting more moisture than it was sized to handle, the house stays humid no matter how low you set the dial.

Why does my house feel humid even when the AC is running?

The short answer. Dirty air filters are the most overlooked cause of weak summer cooling. A clogged filter blocks the airflow your air conditioner needs to pull heat out of your home, so it cools weakly, runs longer cycles, and can ice up the indoor coil until it stops cooling at all. ENERGY STAR says to check the filter every month during heavy-use months and change it at a minimum every three months. Whether that saves you a specific percentage on an Ontario hydro bill is a claim nobody can make honestly, and section .03 explains why.

.01The basics

What the filter is actually there for

Most people assume the filter is there to clean the air they breathe. That is a side benefit. Its first job is to protect the machine.

Your indoor unit pulls household air across a cold evaporator coil, the finned surface that absorbs heat and moisture out of the air. The filter sits in front of that airflow and catches dust, lint, pollen and pet hair before they land on the coil. Carrier, whose equipment we install, puts it plainly: the filter traps pollutants that would otherwise coat the components and choke the machine from the inside.

That gives the filter two jobs that pull against each other. It has to be dense enough to catch particles, and open enough to let air through. When it loads up with debris, the second job fails first, and the whole system feels it.

.02The damage

What a clogged filter does to summer cooling

Airflow is not one symptom among many. It is the thing everything else depends on. When it drops, the failures arrive in order.

Weaker cooling first. Less air across the coil means less heat carried out of the house per minute. On a mild day you may not notice. On the hottest afternoon of the year, the system simply cannot keep up, and the thermostat never reaches its setting.

Longer run times next. The thermostat measures temperature, not effort. It keeps calling for cooling because the target is never met, so the system runs and runs. This is the part homeowners misread as a dying air conditioner.

Then ice. This is the one that surprises people. Restricted airflow lets the coil drop below freezing, and the moisture condensing on it turns to ice. A frozen coil blocks airflow further, which makes more ice. Cooling stops completely, and the melt can leave water where you do not want it. If you see ice, shut the system off at the thermostat and leave the fan running to thaw it.

And dirt where it does not belong. ENERGY STAR notes that a clean filter also keeps dust and dirt from building up inside the system, which is what leads to expensive maintenance or early failure. Once the coil itself is coated, a new filter will not undo it. That is a service call with tools.

.03The honest part

The 5 to 15 percent figure, and what happened to it

If you have read anything about air filters, you have seen this sentence: replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5 to 15 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. It is on hundreds of HVAC company blogs. It was in the earlier draft of this very page.

We went to check it on 17 July 2026. Here is what we actually found.

The number is real, but its source page is gone. The URL that nearly every site cites for it, energy.gov/energysaver/maintaining-your-air-conditioner, now returns a 404. The Department of Energy’s current Energy Saver page on air conditioner maintenance describes the mechanism, that dirty filters reduce airflow and let dirt reach the evaporator coil, but it no longer publishes the 5 to 15 percent figure at all.

The figure does still exist in a DOE-hosted document: the Energy Saver 101 home cooling infographic, which states that routinely replacing or cleaning your air filters can lower an air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5 to 15 percent. That PDF carries no publication date and sits on a legacy path.

And the citation chain is drifting. Carrier Canada’s own air filter page still quotes the figure, footnotes it, and that footnote links to the dead DOE URL. Carrier also restates it as a 5 to 15 percent increase in efficiency, which is not the same claim as a 5 to 15 percent reduction in consumption. Those two sentences describe different arithmetic.

So here is our position, and you can hold us to it. The figure came from the DOE, it is a reasonable order of magnitude, and we have no better one. But it is a United States estimate with no stated test conditions, no date, and no Ontario context. It was never a promise about your hydro bill, and anyone who prints it next to a dollar amount for your house is guessing.

What is worth doing does not depend on the number. A filter costs a few dollars and five minutes. The coil it protects, and the compressor behind that, do not.

.04The schedule

How often to change it

There is a floor and there is a judgement call. The floor comes from ENERGY STAR: check your filter every month, especially during heavy-use months such as winter and summer, and if it looks dirty after a month, change it. At a minimum, change it every three months.

The judgement call is everything else, and it depends on your filter and your household.

Carrier also lists what shortens every one of those intervals: poor indoor air quality from smoking, candles, a wood stove or nearby construction; allergy or asthma sufferers in the home; multiple pets; a larger home moving more air; and heavy use, including running the fan continuously. If two or three of those describe your house, treat 30 days as the interval and stop reading charts.

One habit beats any schedule. Write the date on the cardboard frame with a marker when you install it. The guesswork is the actual problem.

.05Filter choice

MERV, and why higher is not automatically better

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is the industry scale for how well a filter traps airborne particles, and it runs from 1 to 16, with 16 catching the most. The word minimum matters: it reflects the filter’s worst-case performance in testing, not its best.

The U.S. EPA’s guidance is that if you upgrade, choose a filter rated at least MERV 13, or as high as your system fan and filter slot can accommodate. The EPA also notes that filters rated MERV 13 and above must demonstrate at least 50 percent removal efficiency for the smallest particles tested.

Now the part the filter aisle does not tell you. A denser filter is harder to pull air through. Push the MERV higher than your blower and your filter slot were designed for, and you recreate the exact problem this article is about: restricted airflow, weak cooling, a coil that wants to freeze. The EPA’s own wording carries the escape hatch, “as high as your system can accommodate,” and it says you may need an HVAC technician to work out what that is. Carrier suggests MERV 12 to 16 specifically for homes with allergy or asthma sufferers, which is a different question from what your ductwork can breathe through.

Read this before you upgrade. A high-MERV filter in a system that cannot handle the pressure drop is worse than the basic filter it replaced. If you want better filtration, the right move is usually a thicker filter with more surface area in a proper media cabinet, not a denser one crammed into a 1 inch slot. Ask before you buy, not after the coil ices up.

.06The limits

What a clean filter cannot fix

We sell air conditioners and we service them, so take this section as the one where we argue against our own marketing. A filter change is the cheapest thing you can do, which is exactly why it gets oversold as a cure.

A fresh filter will not fix any of these:

An undersized or badly installed system. If the equipment was wrong for the house on day one, no filter changes that. It will run long cycles forever.
Low refrigerant. Refrigerant is not consumed. If the charge is low, there is a leak, and topping it up without finding the leak is throwing money into the air.
A coil that is already dirty. Once dust has bypassed a loaded filter and coated the evaporator, cleaning it is hands-on work. A new filter stops it getting worse and does nothing about what is already there.
Leaky or undersized ducts. Air lost into an attic or crawlspace never reaches a room. ENERGY STAR estimates sealing and insulating ducts can improve system efficiency by as much as 20 percent, and that is a separate job.
A failing compressor or blower motor. Poor airflow shortens their lives. It does not resurrect them.
Humidity you can feel. If the house is cool and still clammy, that is usually sizing, run time or ventilation, not filtration.

If you changed the filter and the house still will not cool, the filter was not the problem. That is useful information, and it is worth more than another trip to the hardware store.

.07The call

When to call a licensed technician

Changing a filter is a five minute job you should do yourself. Shut the system off at the thermostat, find the filter in the return-air grille or at the indoor air handler, note the size printed on the frame, slide the old one out, slide the new one in with the airflow arrow pointing toward the blower, and write the date on it.

Call someone when the symptom outlives the filter. Ice that returns after a thaw and a fresh filter. Cooling that is still weak with a clean filter in place. Grinding, screeching or short cycling. Water where the indoor unit lives. Rising indoor humidity. Those are airflow, charge or component problems, and in Ontario the work on them is licensed for a reason.

Questions we get asked

Can a dirty filter stop my air conditioner from cooling completely?

Yes. Dirty air filters are one of the most common reasons an AC stops cooling: restricted airflow lets the evaporator coil drop below freezing, and condensing moisture turns to ice on it. Once the coil is iced over, airflow stops and so does cooling. Shut the system off at the thermostat, let it thaw, and fit a clean filter. If the ice comes back, the filter was a symptom and not the cause, so call a technician.

How often should I change my filter during an Ontario summer?

ENERGY STAR says check it every month during heavy-use months and change it at a minimum every three months. Carrier says a basic 1 inch fibreglass filter should be checked and probably changed about every 30 days, while a 4 inch pleated filter can last from 3 months to a full year. Homes with pets, allergy sufferers, smokers or a wood-burning fireplace should work to the shorter end of every range.

Will changing my filter lower my hydro bill by 5 to 15 percent?

Nobody can tell you that honestly. The 5 to 15 percent figure comes from a U.S. Department of Energy infographic that carries no date, and the DOE page that most sites cite for it now returns a 404. It is a reasonable order of magnitude for a badly clogged filter, not a prediction for your house, and it was never measured against Ontario electricity prices or an Ontario summer.

What MERV rating should I put in my system?

The EPA says at least MERV 13 if you are upgrading, or as high as your system fan and filter slot can accommodate, and that second half is the important half. A filter denser than your blower was designed for restricts airflow and causes the problem you were trying to avoid. Check what your equipment supports before you buy, and if you want serious filtration, ask about a thicker filter in a media cabinet rather than a denser one in a 1 inch slot.

Do dirty air filters damage the air conditioner itself, or just waste energy?

Both. ENERGY STAR notes a clean filter prevents dust and dirt building up inside the system, which is what leads to expensive maintenance and early failure. Once dust bypasses a loaded filter it settles on the evaporator coil and insulates it, and the blower and compressor run longer and hotter against the restriction. The energy waste is the cheap part of the bill.

Short answer: an air conditioner announces its problems in four main signals, and each points somewhere specific. Weak airflow usually starts at the filter: the US Department of Energy puts the energy saving of replacing a dirty filter at 5 to 15 per cent of the air conditioner's consumption, and ENERGY STAR's guidance is to check it monthly in summer and change it at least every 3 months. Unusual noises point at mechanical or electrical components and are never a wait-and-see item. Rapid on-off running, called short cycling, points at the thermostat, a choked coil, or a system that was oversized on the day it was installed. Warm air from the vents points at refrigerant, a frozen coil, or the compressor, and all three are technician work. What no honest page can tell you is what your repair will cost: nobody publishes Ontario repair prices, and a real number only exists after a technician has seen the machine.

The signals are specific, not random

An air conditioner is a small number of parts doing one job: a filter and blower moving air, two coils moving heat, a compressor moving refrigerant between them, and a thermostat deciding when it all runs. When one of those parts struggles, the symptom you notice at the vent traces back to it with surprising reliability.

That is worth knowing for two reasons. First, some of the causes are genuinely yours to fix, and they cost almost nothing. Second, the causes that are not yours to fix get more expensive the longer the system runs on top of them, because a struggling part drags its neighbours with it.

One thing this page will not do is quote you a repair price. Nobody publishes Ontario repair prices, and any page that attaches a dollar figure to a symptom is guessing before anyone has seen the machine. A real number exists only after a diagnosis, in writing.

Weak airflow: start at the filter

Weak airflow is the most common signal and the one most often fixable for the price of a filter. A clogged filter chokes the volume of air the blower can move, so the system runs longer to do the same cooling, wears faster, and still leaves rooms uneven.

The numbers here are unusually well documented for HVAC. The US Department of Energy's guidance on air conditioner maintenance states that replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower the air conditioner's energy consumption by 5 to 15 per cent, and recommends cleaning or replacing filters every month or two during the cooling season, more often with constant use, dusty conditions, or pets. ENERGY STAR's rule is simpler to remember: check monthly in heavy use months, change when it looks dirty, and change at least every 3 months no matter what. ENERGY STAR also notes airflow problems can cut a system's efficiency by up to 15 per cent.

If the filter is clean, walk the house and confirm every supply and return vent is open and unblocked by furniture or curtains. Closing vents to "push air elsewhere" backfires: it raises pressure in the ducts and makes the blower's job harder everywhere. If airflow is still weak with a clean filter and open vents, the blower motor or the ductwork itself is the suspect, and that is technician territory.

A healthy air conditioner hums steadily. Anything with rhythm, rattle, or pitch is a part telling you it is loose, worn, or arcing, and each sound family has its usual suspects.

Short cycling: the on-off problem

Short cycling means the system starts, runs briefly, shuts off, and starts again within minutes. Each start is the hardest moment in a compressor's life, so a short cycling unit is aging itself at speed while cooling the house worse than a healthy one.

The causes run from trivial to structural. At the trivial end, a thermostat mounted in direct sun, above a lamp, or near a heat-producing appliance reads the room wrong and calls for cooling in bursts. In the middle, a clogged filter or a dirty coil chokes airflow enough that the system trips its own safety limits and shuts down early. At the structural end sits the cause nobody wants to hear: a system that was oversized for the house on the day it was installed, which cools the air fast without running long enough to dehumidify, then shuts off and repeats.

Warm air and ice: the serious pair

Warm air from the vents with the system running is the signal that most often means real technician work. Once you have ruled out the two self-checks, a thermostat left on fan or heat, and a tripped breaker, the remaining causes are a refrigerant leak, a frozen evaporator coil, or a compressor that is failing.

Two things homeowners are rarely told about refrigerant. First, it is not a consumable: a healthy sealed system never needs a top-up, so a low level always means a leak, and the leak, not the level, is the thing to fix. Second, refrigerant handling is licensed work in Canada, so this is never a do-it-yourself item regardless of what a marketplace kit promises.

Ice on the indoor coil or the refrigerant lines is the same family of problem wearing a disguise: it looks like the unit is working extra hard, but ice on a cooling system means airflow or refrigerant trouble. Running it frozen risks the compressor. Switch the system off, let the ice thaw on its own, never chip at it, and have the cause found before running it again.

What a tune-up can and cannot do. Seasonal maintenance catches the cheap versions of most of these problems: it restores airflow, cleans coils, and spots worn electrical parts while they are still component swaps. What it cannot do is un-oversize a system, reverse a failed compressor, or make a fifteen year old unit new. If a technician tells you maintenance will not save a machine, that honesty is worth more than a tune-up invoice.

The ten minute check before you call

A meaningful share of no-cool service calls end at something the homeowner could have found in ten minutes. Run this list first, in order.

Thermostat mode and setpoint. On cool, set below the current room temperature. It sounds insulting until the day it is the answer.
Thermostat batteries. A dead display or a blank schedule means the thermostat, not the air conditioner.
The filter. Hold it up to a light. If light barely passes, replace it and give the system an hour.
Every vent. Supply and return vents open and clear of furniture, rugs and curtains.
The breakers. Indoor and outdoor units usually sit on separate breakers. A tripped outdoor breaker produces exactly the warm-air symptom above. If a breaker trips again after one reset, stop resetting it; a breaker that will not hold is itself a signal, and the next step is a technician, not a third reset.

If the system still is not cooling after all five, or if the symptom is noise, ice, or burning smell, that is the end of the homeowner list. The remaining causes need gauges, meters, and someone licensed to open the machine.

The free fixes, in the order to try them

Start with the vents, all of them. Walk every room and confirm each supply vent is open and nothing sits on or in front of it: furniture, rugs, curtains. Then find the return vents, the larger grilles that pull air back to the system, and clear those too. A starved return chokes the whole house, not just one room.

While you are at it, resist the popular move of closing vents in rooms you rarely use. A central system is designed to push a fixed volume of air across every open vent, so closing some raises pressure inside the ducts. The blower strains, more air escapes through any leaks, and in the worst case the coil runs cold enough to ice. Manage the spare room with a closed blind, not a closed vent.

Next, the filter. A ceiling fan does not cool a room by a single degree. It cools the people in it, by moving air across skin, and that distinction is the whole instruction manual.

The US Department of Energy's guidance is that running a ceiling fan lets you raise the thermostat setting by about 4 degrees Fahrenheit with no reduction in comfort. That is meaningful headroom for the air conditioner, and it is why a fan in the room people actually occupy can quietly fix a comfort complaint the thermostat cannot.

Two rules to get the benefit. In summer the blades should turn counterclockwise when viewed from below, pushing air down onto you; most fans have a small direction switch on the housing. And the fan goes off when the room empties, because a fan in an empty room cools nobody and adds its own motor heat to the space.

The duct number nobody quotes

Here is the figure that explains more uneven cooling than any other, and it comes from ENERGY STAR's own duct sealing guidance: in a typical house, about 20 to 30 per cent of the air that moves through the duct system is lost to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. The result, in ENERGY STAR's words, is higher bills and a house that is hard to keep comfortable no matter how the thermostat is set.

The loss is not distributed evenly. The rooms at the far ends of the duct runs are the last to be served and the first to feel every leak upstream of them, which is why the same bedroom is behind the rest of the house every single summer. Ducts routed through hot attics or garages lose even more, because whatever leaks out is gone and whatever stays absorbs heat through the duct walls on the way.

What a homeowner can do: seal the accessible runs in basements and attics with mastic sealant or metal foil tape, which is ENERGY STAR's specified method, and never cloth duct tape, which the same guidance rules out because it fails. What a homeowner cannot do: reach the ducts buried in walls and ceilings, measure how much each room is actually receiving, or rebalance the system with dampers. That is instrument work, and it is the assessment worth paying for when one room resists everything else on this page.

The upstairs problem

Upper floors fight physics twice. Warm air rises through the house and collects there, and the roof above turns the attic into a heat reservoir that radiates downward all evening, which is why the second floor is often at its worst hours after the sun peaks.

You will find confident claims online about exactly how many degrees hotter an upstairs runs. We have not found a primary source for a universal number, so we will not quote one; it depends on the attic insulation, the roof colour, the ductwork, and the house. What is well established is the mechanism, and the mechanism tells you where the money goes: attic insulation and air sealing reduce the heat load pressing down on the floor, and sealed, insulated ducts stop the cooled air from dying in the attic on the way to the bedrooms.

The envelope matters at ground level too. Air leaks around doors and windows let conditioned air out and heat in, and sealing them with weatherstripping and caulk is cheap work with a long life. It will not rescue a starved duct run, but it lowers the load on every room it touches.

The order matters. Insulation and duct work compound: sealing ducts that run through a cooler, better insulated attic beats doing either alone. But both come after the free tier, because a blocked return or a collapsed filter can imitate every symptom in this section for a fraction of the diagnosis.

When the system itself is the problem

If the vents are open, the filter is clean, the sun side is shaded, the fans are turning the right way and a room still refuses to cool, the remaining causes live in the system: ducts that were never balanced, equipment losing capacity with age, or a unit that was sized wrong on the day it was installed.

Wrong sizing cuts both ways. An undersized system runs flat out and never catches the hottest rooms. For a single stubborn room, the honest menu runs from airflow balancing, to duct repair, to zoning controls, to a ductless head serving that room alone. Which one is right, and what it costs, depends on measurements taken in your house; nobody publishes Ontario prices for this work, and a figure quoted before anyone has measured your airflow is a guess. Short answer: a smart thermostat improves summer air conditioning by cooling to your schedule instead of an empty house, and in Ontario the upgrade is subsidized right now. The Home Renovation Savings program pays a $100 rebate on eligible models, verified on the official program site on July 16, 2026, with the offer running to December 31, 2026. On savings, the honest number is modest: Natural Resources Canada puts typical savings at about 8 per cent of annual heating and cooling costs, and the program itself states savings are not guaranteed. What a smart thermostat actually does in summer

A conventional thermostat holds one temperature until a human changes it. Through a GTA summer that usually means the air conditioner runs all afternoon to cool a house nobody is in, then gets cranked when everyone comes home hot and irritated.

A smart thermostat replaces that with three specific behaviours. It follows a schedule, so cooling eases off when the house empties and recovers before you return. It responds to occupancy, using sensors or your phone's location to notice the house is empty even when the schedule says otherwise. And it reports, showing you when and how long the air conditioner actually ran, which is how most owners discover their system runs far more than they assumed.

None of that is magic. All of it is arithmetic: an air conditioner that runs fewer hours costs less to operate and accumulates wear more slowly. The savings come from run time you did not need, which is also why the savings depend heavily on your household. A home that is empty most weekdays has run time to recover. A home with someone in it all day has much less.

The 8 per cent figure, and what it really says

Most pages selling smart thermostats quote savings of 20 per cent and up, with no source. The traceable public figure is smaller. Natural Resources Canada puts typical savings at about 8 per cent of annual heating and cooling costs, and that is the figure Save on Energy itself cites in its own smart thermostat buying guide.

Two honest things about that number. First, it covers heating and cooling together across the year, not air conditioning alone, and in most Ontario homes heating is the bigger share of the bill. Second, the Home Renovation Savings program prints its own caveat: savings depend on your home, your habits and your weather, and are not guaranteed. A device that adjusts temperature setpoints can only save energy your habits were wasting.

That is also why ENERGY STAR certification matters more here than on most products. Certified smart thermostat models are required to demonstrate their savings from actual field data collected in real homes, not from a laboratory estimate. The rebate program below only pays on models from that certified list.

The comparison nobody makes. The realistic alternative to a smart thermostat is not a blank wall, it is a $30 programmable thermostat, set correctly. A well programmed schedule captures a lot of the same savings. What the smart unit adds is that it keeps working when your schedule changes, it notices when you are away, and it shows you the run time data. If your routine never varies and you programmed your old thermostat properly, your savings will be at the low end. That is not a reason to skip it at a $100 rebate. It is a reason to hold realistic expectations.

This is the part of the smart thermostat story that is genuinely about summer, and most articles skip it entirely. Once your thermostat is installed and connected, Ontario's Peak Perks program pays you for allowing small, scheduled temperature adjustments during peak electricity demand between June and September. You receive $75 when you sign up and $20 each year after, verified on the program page on July 16, 2026.

Here is what you are agreeing to, plainly. On the hottest weekday afternoons, when the whole province's air conditioners are straining the grid at once, the program nudges your setpoint up briefly. You can override it any time you are uncomfortable. In exchange, the grid avoids firing up its most expensive generation, and you get paid.

Start With Your Thermostat

Your thermostat is the single biggest lever on your cooling bill. A few simple settings make a real difference:

Set it as high as is comfortable. Natural Resources Canada suggests around 25°C when you are home and 28°C when you are out or asleep. Every degree warmer can trim cooling costs by roughly 3 to 5 percent.
