A furnace makes heat by burning gas. A heat pump does not make heat at all, it moves it. A cold climate unit that performs around 3.0 at 8 degrees Celsius may drop closer to 1.5 to 2.0 at -20 degrees, which is exactly when you need the most heat. Any efficiency claim that quotes one figure without naming the outdoor temperature is not telling you the whole story.

Pricing depends far more on your house than on the box outside it. Existing ductwork, electrical panel capacity, home size, and whether you are keeping a gas furnace as backup move the number more than the brand does.

The panel upgrade line is the one that catches people out. An all electric conversion in an older Oshawa or Ajax home on 100 amp service can need a service upgrade before anything else happens, and that cost belongs in the comparison from the start rather than as a surprise partway through the quote.
Will It Cut Your Bill? The Ontario Gas Problem
This is where we part company with most of the marketing, including some written by our own industry. In provinces with expensive electricity or homes running on oil, propane, or electric baseboard, a heat pump cuts heating costs dramatically and the case is easy. Ontario is a different market, because natural gas here is inexpensive and electricity is not.
The practical outcome for a Durham Region home heated by a modern high efficiency gas furnace is that a heat pump may reduce your heating bill modestly, leave it roughly flat, or in some rate and usage combinations increase it slightly, depending on your electricity plan, how cold the winter runs, and where the changeover to gas is set on a dual fuel system. What it reliably does is replace your air conditioner, cut emissions, and give you one system to maintain instead of two.
So the honest framing is this. If your furnace and air conditioner are both near end of life and you were going to spend money anyway, a heat pump or dual fuel system is a strong buy, because you are comparing it against the cost of replacing two units rather than against zero. For most gas heated Durham homes, dual fuel is the pragmatic answer. It is also the honest answer to the claim that a heat pump eliminates fossil fuel use in your home, because a dual fuel system does not. Rebates in 2026, What Is Actually Open
Be careful here, because a large number of Ontario contractor pages are still advertising rebate programs that closed. As of July 2026, the picture is this.
- Canada Greener Homes Grant: closed. It stopped taking new applicants on 29 February 2024. Any page still promising you $5,000 from it is out of date.
- Canada Greener Homes Loan: closed to new applicants as of 1 October 2025.
- Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus: closed. Final documentation deadlines passed at the end of 2025.
- Home Renovation Savings Program: open. Delivered by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy with support from the Government of Ontario. Published amounts reach up to $7,500 CAD for a qualifying cold climate air source heat pump, calculated per ton of capacity, with a higher per ton rate for homes heated by electricity, oil, propane, or wood than for gas heated homes. Installation must be by a participating contractor, and on some paths the pre retrofit assessment must happen before any work begins.
- Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program: closing. Natural Resources Canada lists 31 July 2026 as the last day to apply. It is aimed at homeowners currently heating with oil, and in Ontario it is delivered through the Save on Energy Energy Affordability Program with income based eligibility rather than as a simple contractor rebate.

Is a Heat Pump Right for Your Home?
- Strong yes if you heat with oil, propane, or electric baseboard. The running cost improvement is large and the rebate support is best.
- Strong yes if your furnace and air conditioner are both near end of life. You are replacing two things anyway, so the incremental cost of going dual fuel is modest.
- Yes if you have no ductwork and want both heating and cooling. Ductless is often cheaper than adding ducts and an AC.
- Probably not yet if your gas furnace is under about ten years old and working well. Keep it, and revisit when the air conditioner fails.
- Check first if you are on 100 amp electrical service and considering all electric. Price the panel upgrade before you compare quotes.
- Not a fit if your priority is the lowest possible winter bill on natural gas and nothing else. A high efficiency furnace still wins that narrow contest in Ontario.
