A heat pump replaces a furnace and an air conditioner with a single system that heats, cools and dehumidifies. Here is how it earns its keep in the GTA, and the honest limits nobody puts in the brochure.

How one system does two jobs
A heat pump is a heat transporter, not a heat maker. In summer it works like an air conditioner, pulling heat out of your home and moving it outside. In winter it runs the same cycle in reverse: even cold outdoor air holds usable heat, and the heat pump extracts that warmth and moves it inside. Because it moves heat rather than generating it by burning fuel, it uses less energy to keep you comfortable.
The practical payoff in the GTA is that one system covers both seasons, which simplifies maintenance and frees up the space a second unit would take. A few terms are worth pinning down once. COP (coefficient of performance) is heat delivered divided by electricity used; a COP of 3 means three units of heat per unit of power. Cold-climate means a unit built with a variable-speed compressor to keep working far below the point where older heat pumps quit. Dual-fuel means the heat pump is paired with a furnace or electric backup that takes over automatically on the coldest days.
The efficiency claim, without the hype
You will see heat pumps advertised as "300% efficient" or similar. There is real physics behind that, but it deserves an honest framing rather than a bumper sticker. Because a heat pump moves heat instead of creating it, it can deliver several units of heat for each unit of electricity, which is why its COP is above 1 while a furnace is below 1 by definition. Natural Resources Canada describes cold-climate units as up to 2.5 times more efficient than an oil furnace or boiler, and the advantage over electric baseboard resistance is larger still.
The honest part is that efficiency moves with the weather. NRCan's figures put the COP at -8C anywhere from about 1.1 to 3.7 depending on the unit, so the same system that is very cheap to run in the shoulder seasons is working harder in a deep January cold snap. That is exactly why the backup exists in a dual-fuel setup, and why a single flat savings percentage for every home is not something an honest installer will promise.
Why there is no one savings number in this article. Actual savings depend on your local climate, the efficiency of the system you have now, the size and type of heat pump, and how the controls are set. Any company that quotes one percentage for every house is guessing. We would rather size the system to your home and show you the math for your situation.

The environmental case in Ontario
A heat pump lowers a home's carbon footprint two ways: it uses less energy to deliver the same heat, and it shifts heating off natural gas and onto Ontario's relatively low-carbon electricity grid. Both effects are real. How big the reduction is for your home depends on how you heat now and how efficient your current system is, so it is a genuine benefit rather than a fixed guaranteed figure.
That is the honest version of the green pitch: meaningful, measurable for your specific home, and not the same for every house on the street. If reducing emissions is one of your reasons for switching, we can walk through what the change would actually look like for your property rather than quote a headline number.
The 2026 rebate, and the rule people miss
Here is where a lot of advice online is simply out of date. If you have read that the Canada Greener Homes Grant will help pay for your heat pump, that program closed to new applicants on 20 January 2026, and Natural Resources Canada now lists it as closed. Pages still promoting it as active have not been updated.
The program actually running in Ontario in 2026 is the Home Renovation Savings Program, delivered by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas and backed by the provincial government. Here is what it pays, and the one rule that trips people up.

The rule that costs people the rebate: pre-approval is mandatory. The official program states that installations done before approval are not eligible for a rebate. The work must be done by a participating contractor, and the unit must be on the NRCan qualified products list. For the heat pump stream, a home energy assessment is not required. Aire One submits the pre-installation application before any equipment is installed. Program terms change without notice; confirm on homerenovationsavings.ca on the day you sign. The program also warns about scam sites impersonating contractors, so deal only with the official page and a verified installer.
Income-qualified households heating with oil may also qualify for the separate federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program. Eligibility for every program is decided by the program administrators, not by Aire One, so confirm your own situation before counting on any single figure. When a heat pump is the wrong fit
A heat pump suits many GTA homes, not all of them, and knowing the difference before you spend is the whole point of a proper assessment.
- A leaky home blunts the savings. In a poorly insulated house the system works harder to hold temperature, which shrinks the running-cost advantage. Sometimes insulation or air sealing is the smarter first dollar.
- Ductwork has to match. If your existing ducts are undersized for the airflow a heat pump needs, that is part of the job to correct, not a surprise to find later.
- Extreme cold needs a plan. Below roughly -30C a cold-climate unit relies on its backup heat. That is designed in, but it means the heat pump is one part of a system rather than the entire answer.

A heat pump is not right for every home, and it is worth knowing that before you commit. In a poorly insulated house the running-cost advantage shrinks because the system has to work harder. If your ductwork is undersized for the airflow a heat pump needs, that has to be fixed as part of the project. And below roughly -30C a cold-climate unit leans on its backup heat, so the backup is part of the plan, not an afterthought.
