What Temperature Should You Set Your AC When You’re Away?

In modern day life, air conditioning has become essential for keeping cool and comfortable during the summer. But keeping your air conditioning running in the summer can get expensive depending on how hot it gets in your area. There are many ways to save on your electric bill by making some simple changes in your thermostat.

Most people with day jobs are away from their homes for eight hours a day or more. There’s no need to waste all that air conditioning energy on an empty house, but how to reduce that energy is often debated. Though you may think shutting off the air conditioner all together while you are gone would be the best answer, it can actually be harmful to your system. When an air conditioner is turned off and then back on again, the system has to work harder to cool the house down to the desired temperature. The higher the temperature outside, the harder it is for the system to catch up. Doing this repeatedly can strain the system and cause damages that are expensive to repair.

However, keeping your air conditioner running throughout the day will be less jarring for your air conditioner than turning it completely off and back on again, making it the best option when you want to preserve the longevity of your air conditioner’s lifespan. Saving money and energy while still keeping the air conditioner on is possible and very easy. Simply turning your thermostat up to 5°C warmer than your typical temperature setting for 8 hours a day can save you up to 10 percent on your energy bills a year. For example, if you normally have your thermostat set to 20°C while you’re home, but you’re heading out of town, you should set the thermostat to 25°C. Though your house will be a bit toasty when you get home, your system will be all set to lower the temperature back down to a comfortable temperature.
