When you’re deciding on installing a new Carrier or York central air conditioner, the first question you should answer is “What size AC do I need?”
Central air conditioners come in a variety of sizes and it’s important to choose the right size to keep your home comfortable.
The sizing chart below is useful to help you determine your approximate central air conditioner size.
Keep in mind that this chart is used as a ballpark estimate, and there are several factors and variables you should consider, such as how much shade you have, what kind of insulation you have, and how high your ceilings are.
You should get a professional opinion to choose the right-sized energy efficient cooling system for your home.
Air Conditioner size is a key factor to performance and efficiency of your HVAC system and depends on:
- Total volume of your home’s living space, not just the square footage
- Area of sun-exposed exterior walls
- Amount of sunshine on your home
- Age of your home
- Degree of air sealing
- Existing ventilation system and ductwork

There is another way to get an air conditioner size estimate for your house, use this “Old-School” equation:
((House square footage times 30, divided by 12,000) – 1.0) = Required Tonnage.
Example:
A 1,600 square foot home would look something like this:
((1500*30/12,000)-1.0)=2.75
So you’d need a 2.5 or a 3-ton sized central air conditioning unit.
Carrier, York, American Standard, Lennox, and Goodman air conditioners are available in different sizes for different needs for cooling.
